Apartment Friendly Smart Home Products

For those of you that live in an apartment and love new technology that helps you get sh!t done, smart home products are both a blessing and a curse. Many products require installation, like a home thermostat or door lock. These installations are often frowned upon by landlords, and are sometimes useless even if they could be installed.

For your convenience, I’ve put together a list of apartment friendly smart home products that won’t get you kicked out and make your life easier:

Smart plugs – These plug into an already existing outlet, no rewiring required! Once they’re plugged in, connect to the app and you’re good to go! I use these plugs, which are less than $10 a piece, and extremely useful!

Light bulbs – I’ve tested out the Philips Hue bulbs, which work very well and can display 16 MILLION different colors. All you have to do is screw in the bulbs and connect the hub to WiFi!

Streaming device – Since streaming devices have been around for awhile, you might not associate them with smart home products. I currently use the Roku Express, but the Chromecast and Fire Stick are other cost-effective options to watch your favorite Netflix movies.

Home assistant – You can use a home assistant to control all of the above smart devices. I use the Google Home Mini, but there are tons of other products available as well, including the Amazon Echo or Apple HomePod.

And don’t forget about the other wearable devices you can incorporate, such as fitness trackers or smartwatches!

While I wish I had a house I could completely automate, until I stop renting, I’ll be using these products in my apartments! Let me know if there’s any products I missed, or what your favorite smart home products are!
